Take part in IFoRE ’24!
General session submissions deadline:
May 6, 2024, 11:59 p.m. PST

The IFoRE program committee invites scientists, engineers, administrators, entrepreneurs, ethicists, policy makers, educators, and communicators worldwide to submit proposals to lead sessions and presentations of scientific research excellence.

General session submissions are open to both professionals and students. Sessions can be structured in a variety of ways, including:

  • Individual presentation, Mini-symposium, Panel discussion, Workshop, Public interview, Data visualization, Scientific imaging, Networking event, Friendly competition, Product demonstration

Sessions should reflect one or more of the following general themes:

  • Research Seminars (Recent research results of novel or important research advancements)

  • Excellence in Research (Reliability, Reproducibility, Diversity, Ethics, Open Science Initiatives, Interdisciplinary Research, etc.)

  • Research Impacts (Impact metrics, Science Communication, Policy, Civic Science, Commercialization and Entrepreneurship, etc.)

  • Excellence in STEM Education (K-12 Education, Undergraduate Research Experiences, Virtual Teaching, Curriculum Development)

  • • "Florida’s Ecological Crises and How They May Inform Our Future"
    • “The Role of Professionalism in R&D Excellence”
    • “Probing the Structure of Matter Using Electron Microscopy and Electron Diffraction, with a Focus on Metallic Clusters, Nanoparticles, and 2-D Materials”
    • “For Science Policy, States Are Where the Action is for Local and Regional Impact”
    • “AI for Environmental and Social Good: From Pixels, to Science, to Conservation”
    • “Today’s Leading Minds on Research Excellence, Convergence, Ethics, and Societal Impact”
    • “Retraction, When Handled Transparently, Can Boost Scientific Integrity”
    • “Eureka Moments! Encouraging Progress in Science through Disruptive Thinking”
    • “Our Future is Science: A STEM Education Model from Young People at the Intersection of Science and Social Justice”
    • “Innovation by Evolution: Bringing New Chemistry to Life”

Although the definition of research excellence varies, the purpose of IFoRE is to explore these varied definitions—from how research is conducted to who conducts the research and who benefits from it. The goal of all IFoRE sessions should be to deliver a specific idea, lesson, or experience related to recent research results or the concept of research excellence. Session attendees should receive a key takeaway that may assist them in achieving or advancing research excellence throughout their careers.

General conference sessions may be selected on a rolling basis prior to the April 15 deadline. Early submissions may receive preferential consideration. Organizers of select sessions may be invited to submit a full paper or summary to be published in the IFoRE proceedings.

While both students and professionals may lead general sessions, students who wish to showcase research through oral and poster presentations and compete for IFoRE student research awards, should submit using the IFoRE student submission portal (coming soon). Contact jsimmons@sigmaxi.org for more information about the submission process.

 Student Research Competition (coming soon)

Sigma Xi invites high school, undergraduate, and graduate students to submit proposals for oral and poster presentations at IFoRE. Student research presentations will be evaluated by a panel of expert judges. IFoRE Awards will be given to top presenters at each student level. Awards will be given for research presentations across most disciplines, with special awards designated for interdisciplinary research entries. Monetary prizes and Society membership will also be awarded to winning student presenters at IFoRE’s Saturday evening banquet, awards, and induction ceremony. Student research submissions will open in Spring 2024.

Membership in Sigma Xi is not required for contributing to or attending IFoRE. Accepted proposals will be scheduled to take place November 10th, 11th, or 12th. Select proposals may be invited to take place virtually before or after IFoRE, during pre- or post-conference virtual sessions.
